Shay holds key positions in the education sector, including Superintendent of the Jefferson County Education Service District, Assistant Superintendent for Jefferson County School District, and Chief Student Success Officer for the High Desert Education Service District. In these roles, he has played a pivotal role in developing, implementing, and evaluating Oregon’s Student Success Act. This landmark legislation, which brings approximately $1 billion in additional annual funding to Oregon schools and early childhood programs, bears the mark of his impressive influence.

Before his current role, Shay Mikalson served as the Superintendent of Bend-La Pine Schools, which required him to oversee a large educational institution’s leadership, administration, and management. He demonstrated his ability to handle complex responsibilities with approximately 18,700 students, 35 schools, 2,000 employees, and a $190 million general fund budget under his purview. Before this, he served as the Superintendent of the Redmond School District in Oregon.

Shay Mikalson’s influence extends beyond his current roles. He actively serves as a trusted consultant, guiding school leaders, schools, school districts, and other organizations across Oregon and beyond in system‐wide improvement strategies.
